How to Apply for Funding

[Back to ITS]

Please review the information on this website to familiarize yourself with ITS research themes and entry points. After ensuring that your research fits our priorities, you may submit a brief concept note to the ITS team (its@idrc.ca).

Please do not submit a full proposal before your concept note has been considered. ITS staff will review your concept note and advise you if your proposed research idea fits with ITS current priorities and resources. After a positive review of your project "idea" you may submit a complete research proposal. Your idea should be submitted in a specific format. This form can be downloaded as a PDF, Word, or WordPerfect file.

Concept notes should:
  • Outline the proposed research and indicate how it addresses ITS research theme(s).
  • State the specific objectives of the proposed research;
  • Indicate how this research will contribute to addressing national or regional priorities;
  • Indicate how the results of this research could be used (impact);
  • Present a timetable and indicative budget by major budget headings; and
  • Provide a list of the principal researchers and indicate their institutional affiliation.
Eligible proposals will be assessed on the basis of these criteria:
  • Quality and feasibility of the research idea
  • Potential for impact
  • Suitability of research team
Application Procedures

Send your concept note to (its@idrc.ca). Concept notes will be reviewed periodically by at least two team members and the review process may take several weeks. There are no fixed deadlines for the submission of unsolicited concept notes.
