The 5th Session of the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) is taking place on the African continent for the first time. It is organized by
UNESCO and the Ministry of Scientific Research of Senegal, in Dakar, Senegal, on December 6-9, 2006.
COMEST is an advisory body established by
UNESCO in 1998. It is mandated to formulate ethical principles based on scientific knowledge to shed light on the various choices and impacts that arise from progress in scientific and technological fields. It seeks to stimulate a constructive debate on values and to provide expert advice for political decision-makers. It serves as a platform to promote dialogue between the scientific and academic community, political decision-makers and the general public.
IDRC, through its Regional Office for West and Central Africa and with the support of the “
Innovation, Policy and Science” Program, has joined
UNESCO and the Ministry of Scientific Research of Senegal in supporting the activities of the 5th Session of COMEST, and more specifically the
Forum of Young African Researchers scheduled on Wednesday, December 6, 2006.
