IDRC has supported research in Honduras since 1977. Early research focused on agriculture, notably on cropping systems and banana breeding, as well as on health and employment-related issues.

After the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, Honduras focused on rebuilding homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. The disaster served as a catalyst for dialogue and concerted action on development involving government, civil society, and international donors.
