The Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) is a partnership formed by four Canadian agencies - Health Canada; the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; the International Development Research Centre; and the Canadian International Development Agency- to strengthen Canada’s role on the global health research scene. GHRI funds and facilitates innovative, inter-disciplinary research and training programs to address the priorities of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). It promotes egalitarian Canada-South collaborations - engaging health research and health system stakeholders in partnerships to develop new knowledge to strengthen LMIC health systems and build global health research capacity in developing countries and in Canada.

In its first years, GHRI funded 70+ small research grants, supported the Canadian International Immunization Initiative (CIII2), and fostered the evolution of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR). CCGHR is a non-profit organization promoting research in Canada and nurturing productive partnerships among Canadians and individuals from LMICs.

Current GHRI programs include
:

  • the African Health System Initiative to Support African Research Partnerships (AHSI-RES);
  • the Canadian International Immunization Initiative, Phase 2 (CIII2) Operational Research Grants;
  • the HIV-AIDS Prevention Trials Capacity Building Grants; and
  • the Teasdale-Corti Global Health Research Partnership Program which has four components: Team Grants, Global Health Leaders Awards, Liaison and Seed Grants for Linking Research with Research Users; and Ongoing monitoring and evaluation for Learning from the Program.
