Bio
John Githongo is senior research associate at Oxford University and senior member, St Antony’s College. One of Africa’s most distinguished advocates for transparency and good governance, he served as Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President of the Republic of Kenya in charge of Governance and Ethics, from 2003 until 2005, when he resigned his post as Kenya’s leading corruption fighter. Subsequently, he released a report outlining large-scale government fraud in Kenya. Prior to his appointment to the president’s office, Githongo was a director on the global board of Transparency International and was a founding member and executive director of its Kenyan chapter. An honours graduate in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Wales (Swansea), he has also worked as a consultant and journalist. Awarded an IDRC fellowship, John Githongo is currently dividing his time between the Parliamentary Centre, where he will contribute to its work in democracy and good governance, and Queen’s University, where he will collaborate on a major research initiative on ethnicity and democratic governance.
