Bio
Ms. Marie Angelique Savané is a sociologist from Senegal. She has worked with various UN agencies such as UNRISD, HCR and UNFPA in Africa, Geneva and New York, where she has served as Head of Research, Team Manager and Director for Africa. During this period, she participated in many international debates on issues such as: North-South relations, South-South cooperation, Development Challenges, Women, Population Problems, etc. She has also published articles and edited books. Ms. Savané served as a Member of various independent commissions, such as the South Commission which was chaired at the time by the late J. Nyerere; the Global Governance Commission chaired by Shridath Ramphal and Ingvar Carlson, and the UNESCO Commission on Education in the 21st century chaired by Jacques Delors. Ms. Savané served on the Boards of various national and international institutions and was a member of Advisory Boards of institutions such as ILO and the World Bank. She collaborated with President Jimmy Carter at the International Negotiation Network and the Africa Leadership Forum with President Obasanjo. Ms. Savané was also a key person in the emerging African civil society in the seventies and eighties. She was the founder of the Association of African Women for Research and Development in 1977 and a Founding Member of the Forum of African Voluntary Organisations in 1986. She was also involved in research networks like CODESRIA. Ms. Savané is currently an international consultant and Chairperson of the Foundation in Support of Basic Initiatives and a columnist on a weekly magazine, Nouvel Horizon.
