Abstract

This project is being carried out in parallel with a research-action project entitled, Mbeubeuss Landfill : Exploring Options to Protect Health, the Environment, and Livelihoods in Sénégal (103801). The project envisions a healthy, sustainable, inclusive and culturally appropriate built environment in support of productive communities on the urban periphery where agricultural production must reconcile with (often informal) urbanization. The emphasis will be placed on simple, accessible means of facilitating horticulture and animal husbandry, in-situ water and waste treatment, and the use of recycled materials from the landfill in construction. The project will include various measures to transfer the lessons learned to training programs and interventions at the municipal and national level.
