Abstract
The quality of diets within Africa food systems appears to be getting worse as evidenced by the increase in micronutrient deficiencies, chronic diseases and low resistance to infectious diseases. Building on previous experience in three countries (Bénin, Kenya, South Africa), researchers will investigate the factors responsible for malnutrition, assess existing strategies based on external nutritional elements and episodic health interventions, and explore how interventions based on local ecosystems and human resources can provide sustainable solutions to hunger and malnutrition. The overall goal is to improve nutrition and health among the rural and urban poor through increased dietary diversity.
