Abstract

This project proposes to undertake a reflection on the potential of integrating productive practices and activities such as urban agriculture and resource recovery into the architecture, urban design and management of disadvantaged neighborhoods in Dakar. The workshop will bring together key actors (decision-makers, officials, architects, urban designers, nongovernmental organizations, and representatives of communities and the private sector) in an intensive design session to elaborate proposals touching on habitat, waste recuperation (reduction), food security and income security. The workshop will also serve as a learning and management tool for better governance. In concrete terms, the workshop will result in a collection of plans for either new housing and neighborhoods or adaptations to the existing built environment, as well as recommendations for integrating productive or revenue-generating activities into the built environment and the laws governing its management.
