Abstract
Despite the establishment of a national diabetes program in Sénégal, the disease is taking on the appearance of a pandemic. It has evolved very quickly, with more than 2 000 new cases diagnosed each year for the last 10 years. The Centre Marc Sankalé, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health (Sénégal), has put forward a research proposal aimed at using information and communication technology (ICT) for better management of the disease. The idea has been well received by IDRC's Acacia (Communities and the Information Society in Africa) program initiative. However, Acacia suggested a preparatory phase to acquaint the research team with emerging technologies such as OpenMRS, currently being tested in Rwanda, and to help with the design of the project proposal. This grant will finance a trip to Rwanda by team members from the Centre Marc Sankalé so that they can see how the OpenMRS application is used. It will also cover the cost of recruiting a consultant to work with the team on the project proposal, and a workshop to validate the project document with various stakeholders and a representative of the Rwandan team.
