Abstract

The Nigeria Evidence-based Health System Initiative (NEHSI) is a collaborative effort on the part of IDRC, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Government of Nigeria. NEHSI was initiated in 2004 in response to the country's commitment to health sector reform. Its goal is to strengthen the healthcare system so that it can deliver effective, efficient and equitable primary health care in two states: Bauchi and Cross River. This goal will be achieved by strengthening health monitoring and demographic surveillance systems; stimulating a demand for improved services by strengthening community participation in health information collection; using the evidence generated to plan, budget and deliver services; and promoting local understanding and ownership of the Initiative. It is expected that the project will result in clear, scientifically defensible best practices to take into additional states.
