Abstract

Following the poverty alleviation program adopted in 1997 (PLP - Programme de lutte contre la pauvreté) and the expanded poverty alleviation program of 1997 (PELCP - Programme élargi de lutte contre la pauvreté), the government of Sénégal prepared in 2001 a strategy document on poverty reduction (DSRP - document de stratégie de réduction de la pauvreté) with the aim of reducing poverty by half by the year 2015. The preparatory phase and adoption of the DRSP occasioned a number of surveys and studies considerably increasing the amount of knowledge on the social situation in the country.

Initiated by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) in 2003, the draft publication of a book on poverty in Sénégal was frozen following a change in the direction of AERC in June-July 2004. This happened at a point when nearly all the first drafts had been reviewed and more than half of the authors were working on the second version of their contributions. This grant will allow the centre for social policy research (CREPOS - Centre de recherches sur les politiques sociales) under the direction of Momar C. Diop to complete the task. Each author has been asked to examine the questions raised by the exacerbation of poverty and inequality, as well as trends in survival strategies.
