Abstract

Buyo region of Côte d'Ivoire is the site of a hydroelectric dam built during the 1980s. Construction of the dam precipitated ecological changes to this agricultural area, including the creation of a considerable fishery. Between 1996 and 2000, IDRC funded two successive projects describing the environmental impact of the dam on the region (065073 et 100484). For various reasons, the project results did not achieve the visibility expected. This travel grant will allow Mr Brou Ahossy Nicolas, doctoral candidate, to take part in an international conference on the theme of social vulnerability, risk and environment in Toulouse (France) 14-16 May 2008. Mr Brou will make a presentation on spatio-ecological transformation and social vulnerability in a rural African environment, with reference to the case of Buyo, southwestern Côte d'Ivoire.
