With the purpose of designing an Asian regional project on intensifying and expanding the role of technology business incubators for enabling innovations and competitiveness in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Asia the ITS program supported the consultation workshop on Stimulating Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Competitiveness in Small and Medium Enterprises through Technology Incubation”. The event took place from July 2 to 4, 2007 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia jointly organized by SIRIM Berhad (Malaysia) and the Industrial Technology Institute (Sri Lanka).

The workshop is expected to lead to a regional project based on a shared understanding of promoting technology business incubation within the national goals of fostering rapid and inclusive economic growth.

The workshop brought together experts from identified organizations from developing countries as well as experts from organizations in countries which are successful in creating new industries and generating growth of small and medium enterprises through technology incubation.

Around 15 participants from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, China, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Australia and Canada participated from the workshop, where they could debate from the exchange of experiences in Malaysia, Taiwan, Australia and Canada as well as from regional experiences among the developing Asian countries.

ITS recognizes the great importance of this kind of event since SMEs account for over 90 per cent of private enterprises in the Asian developing countries and technology incubation services is an important tool in enabling SMEs to remain competitive, to innovate continuously and to successfully manage changing business environments.
