The Mexico office of the Latin American Social Sciences Institute (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales – FLACSO) organized from September 12 to 14, 2007 the International workshop on the “Knowledge Economy in Latin America and the Caribbean”. The conference was organized in collaboration of IDRC’s regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Centre’s ICT4D and ITS programs. During the workshop held in Mexico City, the participants discussed how Latin America and the Caribbean could benefit from the experiences in other parts of the world in designing and evaluating public policies to foster innovation processes. Some 130 participants in the workshop focused on methods to scan and manage the dynamics of the knowledge economy to assess and “predict” it. FLACSO is currently administering the IDRC-supported project “Knowledge Economy for Latin America and the Caribbean” or Fund KE, aiming to provide research to assist policy makers and civil society stakeholders in the Americas region to conceive of targeted responses that enable their countries to benefit from an equitable and more inclusive expansion of the knowledge economy. Through the Fund KE, FLACSO will manage 4 awards given to proposals aimed at increasing the awareness and understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Latin America and Caribbean countries making the transformation towards a knowledge-based economy. The workshop served as well to bring together the researchers of the 4 knowledge economy awards who concentrated on project management and research progress. The four awards were granted to the projects: “Knowledge Management and value creation in R&D centres” (by UNAM-Mexico); “Challenges and opportunities for the software industry and services” in Argentina and Brazil (by Universidad Federal de Rio de Janeiro); “The processes of training as source of employment generation and sustainability of the TIC industry in Costa Rica” (by TIC Business Association and Universidad de Costa Rica); and finally to the project “Knowledge Networks in local production clusters: generation, circulation and appropriation of knowledge for the creation of competitive advantage in Argentina” (by Universidad de General Sarmiento-Argentina). More details on the awarded proposals and the presentations from the workshop can be found at the project’s website at www.continentedigital.net/
