Through the project “Aligning the National Science and Technology Policy with the National Sustainable Development Strategy in Sri Lanka: A stakeholder - driven process”, the ITS program initiative will be supporting the implementation plan and facilitation of a formal adoption of the STI policy for Sri Lanka. Led by the Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND) this project aims at facilitating the Sri Lanka government’s Science and Technology (S&T) policy process and the endorsement of an S&T policy document and implementation strategy for the country. It will draw from a series of background studies on key economic and social challenges and an evaluation of the status of S&T in the national innovation system. The project will also convene a dialogue among key national agencies and engage them in a national assessment to identify strategic S&T interventions and key linkages (including missing and weak links) to respond to the challenges for sustainable development. The key outcome from this project will be developing and finalizing an official S&T policy document for Sri Lanka that addresses the current challenges and opportunities the country faces. It will also conclude with an implementation strategy for such policy. To advance the overall objective, MIND in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology organized an expert consultation on ‘Integrating and Implementing S&T Policy and Projects within the National Sustainable Development Strategy' on August 30, 2007, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The main goal of the workshop was to identify and prioritize key links between S&T options and sustainable development policies The target audience consisted of 30 persons carefully selected to represent a wide variety of stakeholders and senior experts, covering key areas of S&T, economic sectors and sustainable development, drawn from the scientific, academic, policy, development, and business communities. The Hon Tissa Vitharana, Minister of Science and Technology from Sri Lanka inaugurated the workshop. For more information on MIND visit www.mindlanka.org/
