IDRC’s support for research in Bangladesh, which began in 1974, has helped build capacity among local partners for research that has practical relevance for understanding and reducing poverty. Bangladesh has made substantial progress in tackling poverty, especially since the restoration of democracy in 1990. However, more than four in 10 Bangladeshis are still poor, and poverty alleviation remains the central development challenge. Information and communication technologies and women’s equitable access to services, opportunities, and rights are also at the heart of the research supported by the Centre.
