IDRC began supporting research in Benin 21 years ago. Political and social stability under a multiparty political system, instituted in 1990, has enabled the Centre to increase this support throughout the last decade. Current IDRC-supported initiatives include research on health care, poverty reduction strategies, urban agriculture, ecosystem approaches to human health, women and decentralization, and the use of information and communication technologies to achieve development goals.
