IDRC was among the first donors to establish contacts in Cambodia. This was as the country prepared for the 1993 UN-sponsored elections, a milestone in the transition to peace.
 
Efforts to rebuild the country after decades of dictatorship and external and internal warfare brought several challenges. Among these, the unsustainable exploitation of primary resources, particularly forests, was and remains a critical issue for this mostly rural society and is a major focus for IDRC-supported research in Cambodia.
