Connectivity Africa and UNECA Collaboration
Project Leader: Aida Opoku Mensah

Institution: United Nations Economic Commission for Africa

Region: Sub-Saharan Africa | Africa

Start Date: 2005/06
The Context

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) is responsible for coordinating the African Information Society Initiative (AISI) action framework. IDRC's Acacia program was developed in the context of the AISI framework and when IDRC's Connectivity Africa came into being, it too looked to AISI for guiding principles. This grant will support enhanced collaboration between Connectivity Africa and UNECA through two mechanisms: the Partnership for Information and Communication Technologies in Africa (PICTA) and UNECA participation in the Connectivity Africa Advisory Committee.

Project Objectives
  • to support IDRC's collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) as the two institutions are jointly involved in implementing the African Information Society Initiative (AISI) as well as, more specifically, in coordinating and advising Connectivity Africa (CA).
  • to encourage UNECA to implement activities under the CA framework, particularly within its "Partnerships and Networks" theme;
  • to support the participation of UNECA in CA Advisory Committee meetings;
  • to support the Partnership for ICTs in Africa (PICTA) initiative managed by the UNECA;
  • to optimise UNECA's convening power and facilities in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and
  • to support collaboration between Acacia and UNECA in support of meeting the objectives of the AISI.
