IDRC began supporting research related to health in Zambia in the 1970s and continues to focus on this area to this day. The first efforts helped improve treatments for common communicable and parasitic diseases. More recent initiatives involve primary health-care research.
 
In recent years, declining resources for health and a growing disease burden, especially from HIV/AIDS and malaria, have led to a worsening health profile. IDRC is supporting efforts to redress this situation.
