IDRC began supporting research in Zimbabwe in 1981. Over the two following decades, the Centre’s Zimbabwean partners advanced knowledge in such areas as health, nutrition, social policy reform, and municipal development.
 
IDRC-supported research on participatory management of the environment and natural resources had several important outcomes not only nationally, but also throughout the region. A notable example is the CAMPFIRE program, which promoted sustainable uses of natural resources and wildlife.
 
Since 2000, political instability and the consequenteconomic decline in Zimbabwe have had asignifi cant impact on the work of all internationaland local agencies, including IDRC.
