IDRC has supported development research in Sri Lanka since the 1970s. In this primarily agrarian country, the Centre has focused much of its attention on improving farming practices. Research has also helped to encourage urban agriculture as a livelihood activity, develop more accurate poverty monitoring tools, and spread information and communication technologies in poor rural areas.
Several
IDRC-funded efforts have sought to better understand the causes and impact of the long running civil conflict that has hampered development in Sri Lanka. In addition, the December 2004 tsunami severely damaged coastal areas killing more than 30 000 people and displacing 1.5 million.
