The Vodafone/DFID study looks into the economic and social impacts of mobile telecommunications in Africa and includes four papers: 1)The impact of telecoms on economic growth in developing countries, Waverman, Mescia and Fuss (February 2005); 2)The relationship between mobile telecommunications infrastructure and FDI in Africa, Willams (February 2005); 3)Mobile communications in South Africa, Tanzania and Egypt: Results from community and business surveys, Samuel, Shah and Hadingham (February 2005); 4)Linking mobile phone ownership and use to social capital in rural South Africa and Tanzania, Goodman (February 2005) There are now more than 82 million mobile users in Africa; the fastest-growing mobile market in the world during the past five years. This study finds evidence that Mobile telephony has a positive and significant impact on economic growth. It also concludes that mobile communications networks, in addition to the openness of the economy, the level of GDP and other infrastructure, are positively linked with Foreign Direct Investment into Africa. Mobiles phones in the countries surveyed in Africa are proving to be important for small businesses, for job search, and for improving relations with family and friends. |
