| Gauging and Engaging Public Opinion |
The eruption of the Al-Aqsa intifada in 2001 and the continuing cycle of violence since then are leading to an increasing polarization of people’s attitudes about each other in both Palestine and Israel. It has been argued by many analysts that even if the more comprehensive Taba negotiations which took place in January 2001 had led to a deal, Palestinian and Israeli leaders would have had a hard time selling that deal to their publics. This would have been mainly due to the fact that both leaderships have failed to communicate with their publics and prepare them for a compromise throughout the negotiation process. The EASF attempted to contribute to filling that gap by funding activities aimed at engaging a public debate on various aspects of the refugee issue and better understanding refugee views regarding a solution.
