2008-04

Gilles Forget, IDRC’s regional director for West and Central Africa, has been awarded the prestigious title, Officer of the Order of Merit (l’Ordre national du mérite) by Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade.

The award recognizes individuals and institutions – both Senegalese and foreign – who have contributed to Senegal’s advancement.

Forget received news of the honour while on official travel in Côte d’Ivoire.

"[It was] quite a surprise to receive this news from Senegal here in the Côte d’Ivoire by a friend [who was] charged by the presidency to hand deliver the letter," said Forget via email.

An award ceremony is yet to be scheduled in Dakar.

Forget was named Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Bénin in 2002. He is retiring this summer after 25 years with IDRC.
