IDRC has been supporting research in Côte d’Ivoire since the 1970s, including pioneering work on the impact of economic development on human health and the sustainability of ecosystems in the country’s southwestern region of Buyo. Through this research, now drawing to a close, the University of Abobo-Adjamé and the Institut national de la recherche scientifique at the Université du Québec have identified how communities can reduce their exposure to water-borne diseases and toxins from pesticides.

In 2002, long-simmering disputes erupted in civil war, curtailing IDRC’s work in the country.
