Context: Why is this project important?
Donation of personal computers - whether from Northern to Southern countries or from government or the private sector to civil society organizations - has resulted in large quantities of electronic waste (e-waste) in developing and transition countries. The quantity and toxicity of e-waste is posing increasing occupational and environmental health threats. This project aims to identify environmentally responsible and sustainable solutions to the problem of e-waste.

The Project: How does this initiative address the development problem?
In order to identify environmentally responsible and sustainable solutions to the problem of e-waste this project will set up a regional platform that, through applied research, capacity building and communications, will promote the proper management and disposal of e-waste in Latin America and the Caribbean. The project will also explore the social business opportunities presented by recycling. Working links have been set up with a group of leading institutions with experience in this matter.

Objectives:
To put into action an associative regional platform that, through applied research, capacity building and communicational management endorses, articulates and disseminates initiatives that promote solutions for the prevention, adequate management and final correct treatment of electronic waste (e-waste) generated by personal computers (PCs) in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

To acquire a body of knowledge on the e-waste generated by PCs in LAC so as to propel incidence processes; the training on the e-waste issue and promotion of satisfactory policies according to the research findings.

To develop the capacities of different social agents in order to establish a conscious socio-political and informed community involved in the construction of a prevention system of PCs e-waste and its final treatment, responding to the particularities of the LAC region.

To facilitate the articulation and cooperation among different social agents, to promote and replicate experiences which encourage the development of the prevention and recycling of PCs wastes in the region.

To prepare a communicational system that will provide useful and pertinent information so as to constitute a reference point of content and experiences on PCs e-waste, from and for the LAC region.

Development Impact
Promote the proper management and disposal of e-waste in Latin America and the Caribbean. The project will also explore the social business opportunities presented by recycling.
