IDRC will be hosting a presentation by Dillon Alleyne, Professor, Department of Economics, University of West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica; and IDRC Visiting Research Fellow at the Center for Global Development in Washington, D.C. on: “Migration and Development in the Caribbean: Trends and Emerging Research.” The impact of migration on the economic development of sending countries has again emerged as an important issue due to the significant outflow of educated emigrants from developed to developing countries. This is particularly the case for several Caribbean member countries of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) that have had intense skilled migration to Canada and other OECD countries. Prof. Alleyne will talk about some of the recent trends in migration issues in the Caribbean, recent research initiatives on migration, and prospective research. IDRC is providing multi-year support to the Center for Global Development in Washington to fund an annual visiting fellow from a developing country. Dr. Alleyne is the first fellow, and has spent the last year in Washington. He will soon be returning to his position at the University of the West Indies. Dr. Alleyne has worked on fiscal policy and related issues for the Government of Jamaica, the World Bank, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). Prior to joining the staff at the Department of Economics, Mona, he was a Research Fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) in Mona, Jamaica. While he is visiting Ottawa, he will also be giving a seminar at Carleton University. Seating is limited. For inquiries please contact Rossana Montoya at (613)236-6163 ext 2557, or at rmontoya@idrc.ca.
