Lacor Hospital: An African Success Story runs until November 23 at the National Archives Canada.

The photography exhibition, Lacor Hospital: An African Success Story, opened in Ottawa, Canada, on October 28. The exhibit’s 60 images trace the growth of Lacor Hospital from a small clinic in northern Uganda into one of the best non-profit medical centres in equatorial Africa. Original documents and artifacts related to the hospital’s beginnings accompany the photographs by Italian photographer Mauro Fermariello.

Dr Dominique Corti, honorary president of the Lucille Teasdale and Piero Corti Foundation, and Dr Martin Ogwang, the hospital’s institutional director, attended the vernissage, hosted by Library and Archives Canada. Rohinton Medhora, IDRC’s Vice-President, Programs, spoke of the hospital’s legacy of empowerment. “These photographs show the inspiring result of Lucille Teasdale and Piero Corti’s life work. IDRC is proud to be part of this legacy by helping Lacor Hospital continue to build its capacity as a medical centre that meets the needs of the region’s poor.” Almost 50 years ago, Lucille Teasdale – one of Canada’s first women surgeons – and her husband Piero Corti started a small 30-bed hospital in Gulu, Uganda. Lacor has survived decades of conflict, the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and an outbreak of Ebola. Today, it treats 300,000 people a year as it trains the next generation of Ugandan medical professionals.

In 2006, IDRC committed CA$250 000 to Lacor Hospital over five years. These funds are being used to help the hospital develop a long-term strategic plan, improve management capabilities, and build the hospital’s information management and information technology systems. This will help the hospital provide enhanced patient care, and has the potential to contribute to the development of a Ugandan health information system. The exhibit runs through November 23 and is organized by the Lucille Teasdale & Piero Corti Foundation and Canada's IDRC.  View a slideshow of the exhibit’s images
