An Ecosystem Approach to Human Health: Communicable and Emerging Diseases

 

 

The International Workshop: "An Ecosystem Approach To Human Health: Communicable And Emerging Diseases" took place from November 7-12, 1999 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) at the Escola Nacional de Saude Publica (ENSP), Fundacao Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ). It was jointly organized by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC - Canada), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). 

The general objectives were:

  • To establish a conceptual framework based on ecosystem approach to human health;
  • To identify, adapt and disseminate methods for preventing communicable and emerging diseases through better ecosystem management; 
  • To develop a set of policy recommendations to implement integrated community-based and sustainable strategies.
The Workshop made emphasis on the following issues:
  • The links between stressed ecosystems and tropical and emerging diseases.
  • The conceptual, environmental, developmental and social - demographic basis of emerging diseases.
  • The identification and development of appropriate and effective interventions and policies that will lead to better management of ecosystems in order to improve human health.
  • Particular emphasis was placed on  participatory, trans – disciplinary, socially- and gender- sensitive methodologies.
The meeting included plenary sessions, panels and working groups on the following topics:
    • The Ecosystem Approach and Public Health Paradigms
    • The Ecosystem Approach to Tropical Diseases and Human Health
    • Emerging Diseases, an Ecological Perspective: Conceptual Basis.
    • Social-Demographic Aspects. 
    • Development Projects: Ecosystem Challenges and Public Health.
    • Integrated Policy Options for Prevention and Control.
Case-study sessions made emphasis on the environmental and social dimensions and promoting strategies for community involvement.
