General instructions and requirements for applications for all IDRC funding are on the IDRC website. This section addresses the specific instructions for applications to GEH, which must adhere to the vision, scope and objectives of the program. Please consult our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for further details on GEH project applications. Click here for information about other competitions, including call for proposals and call for papers.
Although GEH plans to expand its research focus in the future, at present it only supports research in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean. Specifically, GEH supports Southern researchers in these two geographic regions. Multicountry proposals involving South-South or South-North partnerships (including South - Canada) are welcome. All proposals must be developed by multidisciplinary and multistakeholder teams, and the application must be submitted on behalf of the team by a Southern institution housing one or more of the project leaders.
Interested applicants are encouraged to submit a brief letter of intent to the GEH team (health@idrc.ca) to ensure that the proposed research fits the mandate and resources of GEH. All proposals must relate to the GEH`s vision, scope and objectives and address the following specific questions:
- To which general and specific objectives of GEH does this project respond, and how? Through which entrypoint(s)?
- How does or how could this project help to strengthen health systems?
- How will this project contribute to improving health equity (equity of access and/or equity of health outcomes)?
- How does or how could this project contribute to promoting effective civic engagement in support of health and social equity?
- How does this project address challenges of governance? Such governance challenges might include: understanding how decisions are taken and implemented, how power is exercised, how citizens have their say in the development and implementation of public policy; relationships among stakeholders and institutions; questions of transparency, accountability, corruption, responsiveness; deepening democracy and strengthening the rule of law.
- How will the project’s findings (including results, tools, strategies, and relevant processes) be communicated among decision makers, beneficiaries, and other relevant stakeholders? What strategies are in place to build bridges between research and practice?
