Partnership and Business Development Division (PBDD)

Since its creation in 1970, IDRC has always understood that development research is a collaborative venture. The Centre has encouraged partnerships that foster open and equitable participation, and facilitate an easy interaction between research insight and practical application. For IDRC, partnerships have repaid themselves many times over in knowledge creation, new and productive coalitions, and greater credibility.

IDRC engages in three types of partnerships:
  • Our staff work hand-in-hand with research partners;
  • We undertake joint funding and activities with other donor and research institutions; and,
  • We foster and promote collaborative research between Canadian and Southern researchers, and among researchers in the South.
The Partnership and Business Development Division focuses on all three types of partnerships mentioned above, in the following manner:
  • It works with research partners and networks to strengthen their institutional capacity and financial sustainability;
  • It seeks partnerships with other donors that build on comparative strengths and are consistent with IDRC's program goals; and,
  • It helps research institutions explore opportunities for new partnerships
PBDD’s Mandate

The mandate of the Partnership and Business Development Division (PBDD) is to initiate, build, and maintain key long-term relationships with donors and other institutions committed to the long-term development of Southern research capacities.

It is also PBDD’s mandate to strengthen the resource mobilization capacity of IDRC research partners so as to assist them in establishing and maintaining their own research agendas.

PBDD’s History

The Partnership and Business Development Division (PBDD) was created in 1996 to help secure additional funding for IDRC-supported research.  With the creation of PBDD, IDRC developed a systematic business development approach to partnership forging through the work of Partnership Officers who support the Centre's core programmatic efforts.

PBDD’s Responsibilities
  • Identify and follow up on partnership opportunities with other organizations;
  • Represent IDRC at international meetings;
  • Support establishment and maintenance of relationships with donors and other partners;
  • Participate in proposal development, negotiations of agreements and financing arrangements.

PBDD Programming

In addition to supporting IDRC partnering activities, PBDD manages the Capacity Building in Resource Mobilization (CBRM) project, which provides direct assistance to research partners through capacity building.  For more information on CBRM.
