Abstract

In recent years, the focus of information and data collecting activity in Angola has been on emergency situations and humanitarian assistance. The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), in close collaboration with United Nations agencies, national government units and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), has been at the forefront of establishing early warning information systems in epidemiological surveillance, nutrition status and other critical areas. While there have been significant achievements in this area, there is still a need to set up mechanisms to provide action-oriented information in support of the current transition from war to peace, from emergency to development and from a centrally planned to a decentralized, market-based economy. This project will help set up such a mechanism. The information it generates will be applied in the formulation of programmes of assistance to vulnerable groups and in the development or redefinition of policies in the areas of health care, water and sanitation, children in need of special protective measures, social safety nets and sector reform, among others.
