Abstract

This project will support a range of activities to prepare the ground for the proposed African Landmine Assessment, Monitoring and Information (SALAMA) program. Activities to be funded under this project include: background research and information gathering; workshops in each one of the participating countries (Angola, Mozambique and South Africa); follow-up meetings with individual parties in the three countries; dissemination of workshop discussions, results and conclusions; and the preparation of a detailed proposal for consideration by IDRC, the Canadian Landmine Fund and other donors.

The work will be carried out by a team of six resource persons - three outside specialists and three IDRC program officers. An additional resource person, an information specialist supported by Bellanet, will be available during the final leg of the mission. Expected outputs of the project are: an annotated list of relevant landmine documents, reports and material; an annotated list of relevant organizations (who does what on landmines) in Canada; a similar list of relevant organizations in Mozambique, Angola and South Africa; summary reports from the three country workshops; and a detailed proposal for the establishment of SALAMA.
