Abstract
Bénin, like most African countries, needs to improve agricultural productivity and output. Accordingly, agriculture in that country now makes extensive use of pesticides. As is the case for many other developing nations, there are currently no controls in place to monitor pesticide purchases. One of the repercussions of this situation is that pesticide poisoning ranks second among all causes of accidental poisoning in Bénin. This project will collect the data needed to develop a strategy for preventing the risks associated with pesticide use. In addition, the basic findings will be the subject of a thesis in medicine. The project will also help launch an occupational health research program in Bénin that is directly related to the French-language occupational health training initiative for Africa submitted to the Board of Governors in October 95.
