Abstract

Urban market gardening is an increasingly important revenue generating activity throughout Bénin. Cotonou, the economic capital of Bénin, has numerous sites where this activity has been carried on for almost 40 years. The overall objective of this project is to evaluate the health risks associated with market gardening operations with a view to improving the health of the men and women involved in it. The research will include discussion groups involving market gardeners and other project partners, as well as direct observation of working conditions. Producers, labourers and dealers will be examined with a view to identifying clinical symptoms that might be associated with parasitic diseases and exposure to pesticides. Samples of soil, water, fruit and vegetables will also be examined for pesticide residues and parasites. This diagnosis will constitute a first step toward identifying methods of production that are economically viable and safe for growers, consumers and the environment.
