Abstract

Togo, Benin and Ghana form a subregion with two natural areas where climatic environmental conditions are diversified and create a rich and complex flora. There are many possibilities to produce essential oils of possible commercial value and preliminary studies have identified a number of plants of interest in this regard. This project will determine optimal conditions for vegetative propagation of selected plants, as well as a technology adjusted to local needs for the extraction of essential oils from the plants. The project will also include an investigation of local, regional and international markets for essential oils, a study of an appropriate setting for the establishment of small businesses for production and utilisation of essential oils and a transfer to peasants of the production technology and of the seeds and/or seedlings.
