Abstract

During phase I of this project, researchers developed a technological package for optimizing the production of quality bricks from local clay using labour intensive methods. The package involved the development of a permanent igloo-type oven with a capacity of 40-45 000 bricks. The oven consumed 50% less wood than the traditional ovens and could make use of alternative fuels, such as peat and agricultural by-products. The second phase of the project will transfer the technological package throughout semi-urban and rural areas of Rwanda, Burundi, and Kivu District, Zaire. It will include studies of the impact of brick production on deforestation; the availability of alternative fuel; and the competing uses of the marshes from which the clay is extracted. Rational and environmentally-sound methods of clay extraction will be developed and promoted.
