Abstract

This project will enable the Panafrican Institute for Development to support eight pilot schemes in Cameroon linking education programs with production opportunities. Also the project will provide more practically oriented course material for rural primary schools.

Post-Project Summary

The Mobile Vocational Training School (MVTS) program was designed as an educational structure that linked rural technical services with the local community. Training courses were organized for both male and female rural youths; and were staffed by existing field workers in the areas of agriculture, community development, health care, and other interested services. A total of 90 people (65% male), from the Bonjongo region participated in the six-week program. Of those enrolled, 50% were over 25 years of age; 80% were literate; 90% wanted to learn French; and 70% were interested in agricultural methods. The MVTS program introduced a new approach to education for the out-of-school rural population. Both students and tutors indicated the courses were valuable, and that they learned new and applicable skills. Results were disseminated in reports and at a seminar at the Centre of Applied Research, Panafrican Institute for Development, Buea, Cameroon, April 8-10, 1975.
