Abstract

The Grand Yaéré, Cameroun's far-northern plain, was until recently periodically flooded during the rainy season, which facilitated economic activities such as traditional agriculture, fishing, animal husbandry, etc. However, since 1972 the area has been afflicted with a chronic drought having major economic and ecological consequences for the region and the country alike. Therefore, the government is compelled to search for and use groundwater resources, the potential of which is unknown. This project will permit the expansion of hydrological research capacity in the country; and will enable local researchers to become familiar with new techniques in computer science, geostatics, model building, and isotopic technologies. The ultimate purpose of the project is to increase the success rate of well drilling which so far is only 20%.
