Abstract
There is growing evidence from widely different regions of the globe that the application of ramial chipwood (bois rameaux fragmentés) to depleted soils can effectively restore soil fertility. A number of West African countries have had good results with or shown keen interest in the ramial chipwood (RCW) concept. This grant will allow a mission of three Canadians to visit research colleagues in Dakar, Sénégal, and Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, for consultation and development of a collaborative research proposal on RCW. The proposal will identify the biophysical and socioeconomic issues that must be addressed if RCW is to be effectively adopted by West African farmers. Once the proposal is received, it will be consolidated with others from East and Southern Africa and submitted to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for funding consideration.
