Abstract

The economic situation in countries in West Africa has caused a drop in the nutritional status of people, increased unemployment, and reduced importation of important commodities such as soybean in the form of cooking oil and animal feed. Agronomic experience has shown that soybean, a protein-rich crop, can be successfully grown in Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire using low agricultural input. Previous phases of this project resulted in increased production and processing, enterprise development, and consumption of soybean. Components of the activities included interdisciplinary and participatory research; development of home level and small-scale enterprises for processing soybean; dissemination of information; and training of a wide cross section of the potential users of the results. The impact of the work in Nigeria was significant. This phase of the research is aimed at using the results obtained in Nigeria to encourage soybean production and utilization in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. The work will involve determining the status of soybean production and utilization in these countries, developing home- and enterprise-level technologies and processing equipment, training of research and extension personnel, and dissemination of the results obtained.
