Abstract

The first phase of this project, "89-1027 Fibre Reinforced Roof Tiles (Cote d'Ivoire)," succeeded in developing improved and cheaper roof tiles that are presently being manufactured and used in Cote d'Ivoire. It was noted in the evaluation, however, that there is a need to improve the quality of the tiles at the production level and to develop local support systems to encourage their manufacture. In addition there is an expressed need for the development of other building materials such as bricks. This project will create and reinforce a support centre to provide assistance to enterprises producing local building materials; improve the quality of roof tiles and their manufacture; promote a demand for local materiels; and strengthen the network of local building materials in West Africa. The overall aim is to promote the use of local materials for building construction, starting with roof tiles but possibly including other building materials such as bricks.
