Abstract

Children coming from economically and socially underprivileged groups often have to drop out of the secondary school system. Those who succeed in their studies may benefit the countries' development. Yet there is no precise information about the benefits of secondary education. There is also no information about the causes of failing, so that appropriate remedial measures could be taken. This grant will help the Centre inter-africain de recherches et d'études supérieures en sciences de l'éducation (CIRSSED) to retrace the academic and subsequent professional path of students who, in the year 1979, were part of the secondary education in the Côte d'Ivoire. The data collected should help evaluate the internal (teaching) and external (results in career) efficacy of the system in respect to socioeconomic, ethnic, urban and rural groups. The data will be absorbed in the CIRSSED info-bank in Togo which, eventually, will offer the basis for more in-depth studies on specific educational subjects.
