Abstract
Due to geological and climatic reasons, Côte d'Ivoire has chronic drinking water supply problems, mainly in rural areas. This project's main objective is the evaluation of water resources contained in the discontinuous aquifers of the crystalline bedrock of West Africa, most particularly those of the Marahoué banks, a typical basin of the subSahelian region of Côte d'Ivoire. The researchers will employ standard ecological and hydrogeological field methods, complimented by remote sensing data to be analyzed with the help of a spatial information system (SIRS). The project will produce a water supply file for each village; assess the relationship between population, water consumption, and the hydrological balance of local aquifers; and train researchers in hydrogeology, in processing images, and in building an information system on microcomputer.
