Abstract
Over the last 20 years, 60,000 dwelling units were built by the state for public housing in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. In the last two years, some of these units were sold. This project will investigate the social consequences of state intervention in the field of housing, through a sample survey of 1,000 households, half of which are owner-occupied, the other half rented. Results will contribute to policy formulation on public housing ownership and will point out the difficulties encountered by households, with particular regard to the fact that through its policy, the state seems to promote the ascending social classes and channel their residential movements.
