Abstract
Since independence, education has constituted a high priority item in the Ivorian budget as it has in most African countries. In the 1960s, such expenses were associated with the hope that better mass education would result in improved economic performance. By the 1970s and 80s, it became obvious that, in spite of positive results, rapid population growth and unavoidable economic adjustments kept off the expected path of success a considerable section of those enrolled in schools. This project will investigate the institutional constraints to scientific education from the point of view of the interaction between science and technology on the one hand and the Ivorian society on the other. Specifically, the efficacy of teaching techniques and the performance of students is to be investigated in about a dozen schools covering 500 subjects, by documentary studies, surveys, direct observations, and interviews.
