Abstract
The failure of many African development projects originates in the neglect of the cultural and social characteristics of the people supposed to benefit from their implementation. Decisions regarding the site, content, etc. are made at some far-away centre by individuals alien to the specifics of the target community. This project will concentrate on the human variable in the development process. Specifically, it will study the role of attitudes, beliefs, and cultural and social behaviour of the population in relation to a development project implemented in the Man region of Western Côte d'Ivoire. Particular attention will be given to the study of reciprocal influences between tradition and new ideas, and the objectives of development, through interviews, documentary research, group discussions, and direct as well as participatory observation.
