Abstract
Agricultural production represents only 9% of Gabon's GDP, the country has to rely on imports for more than 60% of its food. To correct this situation, the country's last Economic and Development Plan stipulated an increase in agricultural investment, stressing improvements in the cultivation techniques of tracts of annually cleared forest land. The plan envisages an association of food and fruit production, specifically of plantations of banana, cassava, corn, yam, etc., with the Irvingia gabonese forest tree, which yields highly nutritional almonds. With the aim of increasing and diversifying the income of farmers, this project will improve fruit production and spread the cultivation of Irvingia; improve the development of tree seedlings in nurseries; and study the performance of Irvingia in association with perennial and annual crops, paying special attention to the tree's industrial potential (cosmetics, food, feed, etc.).
